Love each other or die, is the terrible injunction for our times. But to bid us love lest we perish is to teach us not love but fear. Love compelled by terror is not love but despair. Love should have no alternatives, love should be the sole reason for loving; love should spring of itself, as Venus rose unbegotten from the foam of the sea.
Love each other or die: the injunction has been the ruin of love in our time, for even those who have never heard the commandment have sensed its urgency in the grim climate it has created. Teen-agers elope by the thousands, but are they moved by passion or panic? Are they coming together or fleeing? A haunted love is what our age has taught those haunted young lovers.
The moonlit balconies and rose gardens where love once bloomed so naturally have been polluted by the smoke from Belsen and the ash from Hiroshima. Cupid has become a refugee; St. Valentine, a displaced person. What blinds us today is not the blaze of the Bomb but the knowledge that man is not an animal that loves but a monster that hates. And though other ages have also felt the peril of sudden extinction and have urged their young to love quickly because life is so brief, ours is the first age to make death the alternative to love.

Boy meets girl is how all great stories begin, even Genesis, where the days of creation are but a setting up of the stage for that ever miraculous meeting:
‘But the Lord God said, It is not well that man should be without companionship; I will give him a mate of his own kind. So the Lord God made Adam fall into a deep sleep and, while he slept, took away one of his ribs and filled its place with flesh. This rib, which he had taken out of Adam, the Lord God formed into a woman.
‘And when He brought her to Adam, Adam said, “Here, at last, is bone that comes from mine, flesh that comes from mine; it shall be called Woman, this thing that was taken out of Man.”
‘That is why a man is destined to leave father and mother, and cling to his wife instead, so that the two become one flesh.
‘Both went naked, Adam and his wife, and thought it no shame.
‘The name which Adam gave his wife was Eve, Life, because she was the mother of all living men.’
The miracle that first happened in Eden has been happening every day ever since, but the wonder of it never stales. It’s always news. Our lives begin with the moment when we exclaim like Adam: ‘Here, at last, is mine!’ For whatever else a man’s life may be it’s first of all a seeking for ‘a mate of his own kind,’ and Eden is wherever boy meets girl.
Poetry and song depend on that moment; Hollywood grew rich on it, but even Hollywood couldn’t spoil the freshness of the event. It happens every day for the first time, and every love story antedates Genesis. Suddenly, it’s the beginning of time, in a world where there’s no one else except two, lover and beloved. And both go naked and think it no shame. Those smoochers in parks and cinema balconies aren’t being brazen, as onlookers may think, it’s just that the onlookers have ceased to exist for them. They have been stricken with love’s eye disease.
Blindness as a symptom of love was first recorded in Genesis, which points out that only after the serpent had intruded on the bliss of the lovers did they begin to see: ‘Then the eyes of both were opened.’ But blind love can find its way across oceans and over mountains to the predestined spot where boy is to meet girl. Of all love’s puzzles, this is the most puzzling: the intersection of paths that begin so far away from each other it seems impossible they could ever cross. Yet love works the miracle; and afterwards the lovers never tire of wondering together: ‘How did we meet? How could we have met? How was it ever possible?’
